Can you imagine what it must be like for a woman with obstructed labour, a child with severe burns or an elderly person with pneumonia to face the journey to hospital over rough roads, perhaps at night or in heavy rain, on the back of a motor bike? Without an ambulance there is often little other choice.

Sixteen years of service ferrying patients around the dirt roads of the North Kigezi highlands have taken their toll on the current vehicle which has become challenging and expensive to repair. The hospital needs a reliable ambulance.

When Alan and Helen visited Kisiizi in October 2024, the vehicle had been off the road for five days waiting for parts for repair, which meant that patients could not be transported. We asked the hospital management team what they would most like us to fund raise for in our 25th Anniversary year, and the response was unanimous, ā€œWe really need a new ambulanceā€.We are aiming to raise Ā£60,000 to cover the cost of purchase and equipping the vehicle.

MBEs for two of our trustees

We are delighted to announce that Helen and Alan Smith, two of our founding trustees (current chair and safeguarding lead/secretary), have both been awarded MBEs in this year’s New Year Honours List for services in support of disadvantaged children overseas, particularly in Uganda.

We are delighted to announce that Helen and Alan Smith, two of our founding trustees (current chair and safeguarding lead/secretary), have both been awarded MBEs in this year’s New Year Honours List for services in support of disadvantaged children overseas, particularly in Uganda.

This wonderful news comes as we celebrate 25 years as a charity in 2025.

Helen and Alan are both keen to say that they accept the awards as recognition of the work done by all those involved with Kiziizi Partners (trustees, volunteers and donors) over the past 25 years as well as the hard work done day in day out by the staff of Kisiizi Hospital in serving their community.

Kisiizi Hospital

Kisiizi Partners support Kisiizi Hospital by making a monthly contribution towards paying the salaries of indigenous staff.

We support further training of staff to meet the needs of the hospital and the Kisiizi Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery when requested by the hospital management team.

We contribute to building projects such as the maternity waiting home, the pharmacy and the new surgical ward. We have provided for 21 units of staff housing around the hospital site.

Child Sponsorship Programme

Kisiizi Partners works with Kisiizi Hospital to run a child and young adult sponsorship programme.

We meet the educational, nutritional and health needs of all the children in the programme. As the children grow into young adults they are supported to learn a trade or continue their studies to a higher level.

A few children each year become students at the Kisiizi Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery. When funds are available a maximum of five of them will have the entire cost of their training met by Kisiizi Partners. The rest are partially supported by the programme and raise the rest of their funds from within their community, including from former members of the programme.

Malnutrition Programme

Kisiizi Partners provides financial and technical support to Kisiizi Hospitalā€™s malnutrition project.

Established in 2015, the project aims to ensure gold standard care per WHO guidance for malnourished children admitted to the hospital and to facilitate follow up and community support for families affected by malnutrition. We recognise that malnutrition affects the poorest families in the community. We aim to reduce the financial burden when children become sick which pushes families further into poverty, alongside innovative strategies to support better health and nutrition for children.
